After a year of secrecy about the new project of producer J.J. Abrams (the brain of Lost and Alias), there it finally was, Cloverfield. An American disaster movie of this size, without any film poster, trailer or celebrity whatsoever and made by a director that still needs to earn his credits, is at the very least odd. It’s the first movie since September 11th where New York is the victim of an unknown aggressor. The style chosen is home video. The handheld video images of one of the characters in the film (the only images the viewer gets to see) are just as interesting, uncontrolled, unpredictable and intense as the music made by the four gentlemen of Good Dog Happy Man.
This band from Utrecht won an award by the Grote Prijs van Nederland (Holland’s national Pop prize), category Pop-rock in 2007. Since then they haven’t stopped playing gigs and are soon to release their first album. They have been chosen to write a soundtrack for the Unheard Film Festival. This band stands out by not slacking their voluptuous bass lines and enforcing their edgy guitar licks. Just like The Blair Witch Project, the images and sound of Cloverfield were made to seem as realistically as possible. Of course the question remains whether an undefined monster attacking Manhattan decapitating the statue of liberty with the whisk of his tail, can actually be interpreted as real life. However it may be, this audiovisual roller coaster on which Good Dog Happy Man will take you, is definitely not to be missed!
