Celluloid Jam Sessions

For the third edition of the Unheard Film Festival jazz giants Cor Fuhler and Eric Vloeimans have been invited to the Celluloid Jam Sessions to perform newly improvised soundtracks to short films presented by the festival at the Bimhuis. To fully encounter this adventurous game between visuals and sound both of the artists found reinforcements of equally renowned musicians. Cor Fuhler will form a quarter with Michael Moore, Tony Buck and Wilbert de Joode, and Eric Vloeimans will form a duo with Florian Weber.

Jazz music and (avant-garde) film have been in dialogue ever since the beginning of film art.

As a tribute to this, and restyled to the theme of Unheard Film by focusing on film, the improvisation skills, timing and musical creativity of these renown jazz artists will be put to the test.

Are they capable of making an improvisation that will blend together and give meaning and depth to the images?

During Celluloid Jam Sessions the two ensembles each get to see the short films, which they will then provide with a new soundtrack.

The musicians will wear headphones during the screening of the original version so they will not hear the sound and can make their own interpretation of the visuals. After a short consult amongst themselves, the film will be screened for a second viewing, this time without the original score but with the newly improvised soundtrack.

Influenced by the new musical interpretation the audience will see the film transform. A surprising and sparkling evening awaits you!
