Andrew Niccols’ (The Truman Show, Lord of War) début film Gattaca, that strangely enough never hit the Dutch big screen, presents a grim and sterile vision of the future where people no longer get discriminated for their appearance or ethnical background, but for the quality of their genes. In this amazing science fiction, the director gives his vision on the consequences that advanced genetic manipulation could have on mankind.
Because of the strong storyline and determining music, it is quite a challenge to compose a new soundtrack for this film. In the hands of Arts the Beatdoctor, one of Holland’s most promising artists when it comes to jazzy instrumental hiphop, we can only look forward to the result. Arts’ album, brought out by Unexpected Records (Perquisite’s label), can best be described as a musical experience of samples, beats, and beautiful melodies and once in a while the voice of a guest rapper or singer. Sounds bend towards sound design that in its turn becomes musical sketches only to transform itself into a complete orchestral composition. No wonder reviewers wonder how it is possible that this is one man’s work. Need we say more?
